On June 18th 1999, Stanislaus County Sheriff's detectives investigated the homicide of 28 year old David Allen Hooten. Hooten's body was discovered in the 4600 block of Zeering Road in Denair when deputies responded to a report of gun shots heard in that vicinity.

Detectives spoke with several witnesses that night. Several of these witnesses described seeing three male subjects in a maroon colored vehicle similar to a Honda stopped where the shooting occurred. Witnesses reported seeing the front passenger fire two shots and seeing the victim fall to the ground. The suspect vehicle then fled the area.
