StancoInsider: Sheriff Christianson, there is no question that we are in rough economic times, people are making tough decisions regarding everything from food to housing. How are you able to continue to improve the quality of life for Stanislaus County residents and the Department as well?
The Sheriff: "Despite having to reduce our levels of service and staffing, our team is committed to protecting and serving all of Stanislaus County with the resources we have. Our crime rates are the lowest they've been since 1981. We attribute that to the outstanding work of our deputies and staff who are dedicated professionals. Working together with the community, and in partnership with other law enforcement agencies, public safety, service, civic, faith based, charitable, business, education, agricultural etc. We can make a difference."
StancoInsider: It’s a brand new year. What are you looking forward to most in 2010?
The Sheriff: "Continuing our focus on results. We've enjoyed many positive results in the community. Lower crime rates, a Gang Injunction in South Modesto, successful Rural Crime programs, COPS grant funding and a better level of service through Area Commands and Community Oriented Policing."
StancoInsider: What are some of your short and long term goals for the department?
The Sheriff: "Short term, we need to do everything we can to protect our front line of defense, our deputy sheriffs from reductions in force. Long term, identify and take advantage of sustainable funding."
StancoInsider: From what we understand crime rates within the county have dropped to levels we have not seen since the 1980’s, is this true?
The Sheriff: "Yes, the unincorporated areas of Stanislaus County enjoy lower crime rates."
StancoInsider: That is a major accomplishment, and we applaud you. Can you give us some insight on how you were able to accomplish this?
The Sheriff: "Increased staffing levels, community oriented policing, Rural Crime programs that target property crimes, community awareness programs, outstanding work of deputies/staff, and excellent community partnerships."
StancoInsider: Overseeing a Department of 600 employees would be a difficult job for anyone, how are you able to keep the Department strong, healthy, and motivated?
The Sheriff: "We rely upon a team of highly motivated employees, all working together to achieve our goals and objectives. It's not perfect, but we are ready to face any challenge."
StancoInsider: What is your secret to success?
The Sheriff: "It's not about me. It's about the team of people we have working for the community. Our success is because of our employees."
StancoInsider: What kind of music do you like to listen to, and who is your favorite group?
